Becoming whole through forgiveness

There are several awesome principles from the book “Lord I Want to Be Whole” by Stormie O’Martian on being whole which are thought provoking. Many of us seek wholeness because we have been fractured by our past, by our present and by the uncertainty of our future. A lot of our issues, undoubtedly, have to do with forgiveness...

Forgiveness. How can we possibly forgive someone who has harmed us, abused us or ruined our emotional state of mind? It seems overwhelming and impossible. Yes, it does, but forgiveness is something you do out of obedience to the Lord because He has forgiven you. Forgiveness is your path to freedom! Let’s go over three aspects of getting on the road to forgiveness: God’s Action, Our Reactions and His Word:

God’s Action - Forgiveness, Our Reaction: Because God forgives you, you can forgive others - His Word: Ps. 103:10-12, Eph. 1:7, Heb. 10:17,18; I John 1:9,10.

God’s Action - His Call - Our Reaction: Forgiveness is an act of obedience to God - His Word: Matt 6:14,15, Luke 17:3,4; Eph. 4:32, Col. 3:13.

God’s Action - His Character, Our Reaction: When you forgive, you allow God to work in your life - His Word: Gen. 50:20, Rom. 8:28,29,38,39

God’s Action: His Perspective: Our Reaction: If you are willing to obey, you will forgive in God’s way - His Word: Matt. 5:44, Acts 20:35, Rom. 12:17-21, I Cor. 13:5.

God’s Action - His Provision - Our Reaction: What God calls you to do, He will equip you to do - His Word: Matt. 19:26; Phil. 1:6; 4:13; I Thess. 5:24.

Forgiveness leads to life! Once you can come to grips with forgiving whoever hurt you, you can experience wholeness in your life. It won’t happen overnight, though, and it may even be a very painful process but unforgiveness is a slow death. It doesn’t mean you aren’t saved or that you won’t go to heaven but it will mean that you can’t have all that God has for you and you will not be free from the emotional pain that is tied with what has been done to you.

If God can forgive us for all of the mess we have done - and will do - how can we not forgive others? Forgiveness is a choice. We can’t base our decision to forgive on what we feel like doing - but rather what it right to do. The most important thing to remember is that forgiveness does not make the other person right or absolve them from their actions - but it does set you FREE! The other person is not your obstacle to freedom and healing - your unforgiveness is! Once you give God your pain and begin to release the person into His hands, you are on your way to the cleansing and healing process.

Continue to live at the foot of Jesus - giving Him all of your issues and pain - its a day by day, step by step process. You will know when you have truly forgiven when you can honestly say that you want what’s best for that person and you no longer feel the need for revenge, for retribution or harm. When you have released it you can look at the person and the pain doesn’t hurt as much and instead of someone who has hurt you, you see someone in need of God’s love and forgiveness and you have a desire to be a conduit for those actions.

Begin to take the necessary steps to becoming whole in Christ - through releasing the past, confession and forgiveness.
