Being green in your day-to-day life is something most of us strive for these days. The beauty products that you use can be a big way to help yourself and the environment at the same time.

Something people do not realize is that general beauty products you can buy at a grocery store are actually extremely harmful to the environment and to you. True, it is hard to picture giving up your favorite lipstick or foundation. After all, it only contains harmful chemicals right? Well, just because your skin is used to a harmful product does not necessarily mean you won’t find a consciously green replacement that you will like more.

Luckily, there are many resources based in Long Beach that will allow you to support a local business, contribute to helping the environment, and take care of your skin, nails, and hair.

The Green
The Green is a website dedicated to green beauty products, tips, and advice that is local to Long Beach. The website was started by owner Sandi Sandman, a former beauty salon owner, who decided to start a website where people could buy natural beauty products when she discovered the toll that the standard products she was using in her salon were having on hers and her client’s health. You can even sign up for their newsletter if you are feeling especially receptive to becoming green in your day to day beauty routine.

SENSUI New Beauty
This is the ultimate salon for those who truly desire pampering in a guilt free, natural environment. SENSUI New Beauty is a fully solar powered salon located in Seal Beach just outside of Long Beach. They are the first LEED certified salon in California.

“What is a LEED certified salon?” you might ask. The USGBC or U.S. Green Building Council has developed an amazing and internationally recognized building certification system for the purpose of, according to the LEED website, “providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.”

SENSUI New beauty has qualified, as one of these buildings, therefore supporting their business is helpful to your body and the environment on a number of levels.

Becoming more cognizant of how your beauty practices affect your body and the world around you is an easy way to contribute to the bigger environmental picture while still pampering yourself. How can you lose?
