There is so much talk today about exercise and most of the advice is to walk daily, a brisk 35 to 50 minute walk, preferably early in the morning.

I would go a step further and say that it is good to become an “Inner Athlete.” Working on becoming fit, being your strongest and your most healthy, all come together to give you an edge.

Tips on becoming an athlete include:

  1. Eat and exercise properly
  2. Make a training schedule and stick to it
  3. Always set goals
  4. If you fail, get up and try again
  5. Have a personal best to aspire to
  6. Keep your priorities straight
  7. Make sure you are willing to work
  8. Take care of your body. Eat the right kind of diet. Eat a snack before exercise and after.
  9. Drink enough water especially when exercising.
  10. Adjust your day to get up early and get to bed earlier

It is advisable to set up rewards for yourself, to have a support system or a buddy to work with. Rewards might include a massage or relaxing with music, a gift to yourself of a journal in which to wrte, a good book to read.

Research shows that pre-breakfast workouts decrease the risk of subsequent weight gain. Consistency is necessary and yields results. Research has shown that even 20 minutes a day of exercise is effective, interval training is advised. One investigator advised accumulating 60 minutes or more of moderate activity.

If you are participating in a sport, get knowledgeable about the sport and know safety rules. Study other athletes, especially those in your own sport. Research their training routines, activities of daily life, and how they succeed.

The goal is always to improve performance.
