Become sunscreen smart before Summer

Using sunscreen protection will save your skin

Summer is coming. If you enjoy the outdoors like me, you will go outside every day. Bright sunshine will not stop you, but it can harm your skin if you do not use adequate sunscreen protection. I interviewed Lori Mitchell, RN of Roseville Aesthetics, for some wise advice on the sunscreen front.

Summarizing the debate

There’s a big debate going on right now about higher SPF (sun protection factor). One camp says the higher the SPF the better. The other says the higher the SPF, the more shielded the skin will be. Therefore, the skin will not be as effective creating vitamin D.

Don’t go too high with the SPF

I don’t believe that you can have too much SPF, but you can reach a point of marginal returns. In the trade journals, researchers say, anything over 45 is kind of a nil. What’s the point? People are selling 100 SPF thinking that more is better. Once you hit the plateau at SPF 45, anything over that is not providing a big benefit. The returns diminish when you get to sunscreens with an SPF above 45.

I recommend at least SPF 30. If your makeup label says it has SPF 15, that is insignificant. I do not count what comes in a makeup. It is very negligible. It is not enough to protect the skin. I recommend using a sunscreen prior to makeup application.

My friend says the SPF 50 sample I gave him is very impressive. He says a little goes a long way. If you are using good sunscreen, you will find it gets absorbed well. It will not sit on your face like frosting on a cake.

I wear SPF 45 to 50 every day. I apply sunscreen before the makeup foundation. It is the first product that goes on my skin. Some people say they do not need sunscreen because they are 50 and have not encountered skin cancer yet. That may be the case. Just remember…nobody is getting younger. The great skin you may have enjoyed for 50 years is getting drier and showing more wrinkles. Walking around with no sunscreen could severely speed up your aging process. You may end up looking older than you really are.
