Tax season is upon us and everyone who works is frantically getting their documents ready in time to do their taxes. Preparing taxes is not just for CPA's or tax professionals. Many people can and do fill out their own taxes. If you have strong math skills, can understand the new tax laws and follow the instructions carefully, you can fill out taxes.
If you don't want to fill out taxes on your own, H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt usually are hiring around this time for people to become tax preparers. These companies offer courses that are usually 9 to 12 weeks long. The start of classes is commonly given at the end of summer and early fall. They also may offer brief training and a written test to qualified individuals to work as tax preparers in their offices.
If you want to fill out taxes in the comfort of your home in your spare time, you will need to invest in a few things. You will need to get computer tax software. You must get the professional versions that offer unlimited uses. Prices may vary. The most popular brands to name a few are Intuit and TaxAct. Software is tax deductible no matter how much you paid. Remember to always upgrade, since each year has new tax laws and deductions.
In New York State, you must register your business with the county clerk's office; you can do this at any courthouse. You must also register with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Many people want their taxes e-filed, so you must register with the IRS. To be able to E-file taxes, you must be authorized by the IRS. You will be applying for an Electronic Filers Identification Number. You must also request to be admitted to the E-file program. The form for this request is Form 8633. In New York State, applicants must agree to and pass a criminal background and credit history check before you will be allowed to E-file returns.
It may sound like a lot, but it isn't. If you're honest you won't have anything to worry about. Tax preparers can make approximately between $35,000 to $65,000 a year.
