If the thought of becoming a social media activist seems overwhelming, here are a a few insights into how to get started. The social media animal activist community is large and strong in all of the social media networks. Facebook has numerous organizations and groups that would openly welcome your enthusiam and support. Twitter has worldwide animal activists. Both networks have crossposting available, which means posting on one network can appear on another network through easy-to-use settings and links.
By choosing what your passionate about is the best advice. Whether it is marine life, wildlife in the Sri Lanka forest or the Maasai Wilderness, it is easy to find a group of activists that are on Facebook or Twitter. All these organizations welcome social media enthusiasts who can spend time posting updates, tweeting their agenda, creating videos, launching email campaigns, and writing press releases. Discuss your skill sets with the administrators of the group and see how they can leverage your experience.
A grassroots advocacy group called Hand4Paws is comprised of compassionate social media animal activists who create petitions that range from animal cruelty cases to thanking judges who hand down the maximum sentence to abusers. This is a volunteer organization with no funding or support. Circuit Judge Joseph K. Sheeran of Bay City, Michigan, after receiving a thank-you petition from Hand4Paws for sentencing Jeremy K. Haire to 43 months to 8 years in prison for killing his girlfriend's dog during a domestic violence altercation stated, "People in public life, their decisions are subject to scrutiny. It’s nice to get constructive feedback, good or bad, but frankly, it’s nice to get a pat on the back once in a while.” Hand4Paws has a blog, a Facebook page, a Twitter account and works through change.org on many petitions.
When you are bored watching television or you can't sleep, you can now help those who don't have a voice by signing petitions (and they do get noticed), joining forces with others who care and you don't even have to leave your home. There are many groups and organizations like Hand4Paws on all the different social media networks. If I can help you in any way, get started on this rewarding journey, please contact me through my personal email, nancytsmith@gmail.com or through the Hand4Paws website.
