A few years ago, I came across an opportunity to become an eMentor with the Pennsylvania eMentoring Organization. This opportunity is for working and retired adults, parents, and mature college students, ready to volunteer 20 minutes per week from your computer as online mentors for a high school age youth.
Since you are guiding students, you must be willing to uncover and share your own school and career story. I think this is a great way to show kids that everything they are going through with school, college and careers, are the same things we went through too. I wonder what my mentee's think after reading about how much I disliked school because I was a poor student and didn't get the support I needed. Then reading about my success now as a business owner, author and speaker. Hopefully, it's giving them hope :)
About PA eMentoring - What the site says:
"Think back to when you were in high school and ask yourself: Knowing all that I know now, what guidance about college and careers do I wish I had gotten as a high school student?
PA eMentoring is a chance to give that guidance to a high school student who, below the surface, is just as nervous and scared as you were.
In fact, by giving just 30 minutes a week from your desk or home computer, an online career eMentor can provide the guidance and reinforcement necessary to positively impact a student for a lifetime.
The Program uses working and retired adults and mature college students serving as online career mentors, as well as a structured online curriculum to help give young teens the knowledge and skills they need to "get real" about their futures - "real" about the demands and opportunities within the job market, and "real" about a plan that leads to their eventual success.
The ultimate goal of PA eMentoring is to help kids achieve success after high school by providing them with a detailed, realistic post secondary plan that is created with and supported by a career mentor."
They are actively recruiting PA eMentors, so volunteer your time and help shape our future and yours!
