Become a peacemaker, tear down the walls which divide churches

See also

Christians are good at building walls, both good and bad. If the walls are built to strengthen the Christian testimony or ward off some impending danger to the faith then the walls are good walls to build. But if the walls are built because of perceived external differences, selfish desires or self centered expectations or demands then the walls are built for all the wrong reasons.

The Walls that Divide

The wall of external differences.

Christians build walls based on the differences they see in others who live in the world around them. Christians have the Bible their set of standards by which they judge all other people, if the person measures up to those standards all is well, if not then a wall may be built to block that person out.

The wall of earthly desires

Christians build walls to block out those people who have different desires and ideas than their own. Earthly desires are self satisfying and self centered leading to a lack of focus on what truly matters. Earthly desires can easily creep into the church when a Christian loses focus of God's calling and seeks to impose their own desires on the church body at large.

The wall of expectations and demands.

Christians also build walls against those people they feel don't meet their expectations of a person God would call into His Kingdom. Christians are also good at making demands of people and when those demands are not agreed to up comes a wall.

The three walls are not only built by Christians in order to compartmentalize people in the secular world, they also spill over into the church. A good many churches today are created by the division of church members where one side or the other will not break down their walls in order to bring unity to the church (body of believers).

So in the end church members leave for other like minded churches or they start a new church where everyone thinks as they do, has the same desires and expectations for the direction of the church and nobody meets outs demands on anyone. The harmony lasts at least until someone starts to question certain aspects of doctrine or some other aspects of the what the church believes and then the walls come again.

This is not what God intended.when He set up His church.

In Ephesians 2:14-15, Paul states, "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility."

The church was meant to be a united Body of Believers brought near by the life that unites all believers.

Jesus became flesh to destroy the divisions

Jesus came to this earth to destroy the wall which had come between God and man in the Garden of Eden. He also came to destroy the walls between all of mankind by allowing people to see that peoples of the world are united because they are children of God.

Jesus died to express the unity

Jesus not talked about unity, about how the walls should be torn down and each of followers should be peacemakers who take His love to the world. He also showed the love by dying on the cross to unite all mankind. The spirit who became flesh once again became spirit to express the unity. In the end Jesus became as Paul says, "our peace," and wrecking ball who has "broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility."

Jesus is now the peace that permeates all Christians.

  • He is our peace with God.
  • He brings peace with self
  • He brings peace to others no matter the difference
  • He offers peace for others

Jesus came, He saw, He broke down the walls now it is up to each follower of Jesus to continue His work.
