Just south of Springfield Illinois along Lake Springfield's shoreline is Chatham's Wildlife Sanctuary, a hidden gem. You can find this piece of paradise when heading into Chatham, right off the I-55 frontage road just a short ways is the Chatham Wildlife Sanctuary. Winter doesn't have to be a time to stay indoors and miss the frosty concoctions Mother Nature drums up! For those that love the beauty of winter there are many places to pull over and take pictures of Lake Springfield in all of its icy glory. The Wildlife Sanctuary is comprised of 12.89 acres and is located on Woodland Trail in Chatham, IL. While during winter, a bit of hiking or watching for wildlife are the likely activities, during the summer hours, visitors may enjoy the small playground equipment, horseshoe pits, and soft ball diamond or picnicking in the pavilion and picnic areas. This area is well known for a large deer population and during the Holiday season, visitors may even see Rudolph hanging and relaxing since his big workout is done! Both buck and doe White tail deer populate the area and many locals pull off to watch to see if any antlered deer will pose for a picture or two. Take your camera, a canister of hot chocolate and head out!
