After spending hours applying your makeup, you decide to do a little shopping on the boardwalk. It's about 80 degrees outside and you find yourself entering an air conditioner boutique. When you take off your sunglasses, you realize that your eyeliner is now all of the way down to your cheeks. As you panic, you cannot help but question "what happened to my eyeliner?"

So, what causes eyeliner to smear? It can be everything from the products you use to your actual skin type and how the eyeliner you use reflects it. It can also deal with humidity and the effect it has on the product. You can prevent eyeliner from smearing with these very easy steps.

STEP 1: First and foremost, you want to always purchase eyeliner that is long-lasting. For pencil, try something like Urban Decay's 24/7 or Estee Lauder's Double Wear. For gel, go with Mac's Fluidline or Bobbi Brown's Long-Wear. If you purchase a cheaper eyeliner that has no long-lasting power, the end result will be nothing more than dreadful raccoon eyes.

STEP 2: Secondly, you want to use an eyeshadow primer. Primer works as not only a great finish, but an actual base that prevents your makeup from making a mess. Even if all you are wearing is eyeliner it is great to have the base applied beforehand. For an eyeshadow primer, try something like Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion or Elizabeth Arden's Eye Fix Primer.

STEP 3: Last, but not least you want to spray your face after with a makeup setting spray. I know Urban Decay makes several that cater to individual skin types, which is perfect. It is worth spraying a few times just to know that your eyeliner will last longer.

Whether it's hot outside or hot at the office, following these steps will prevent your eyeliner from smearing. Now, what about another alternative to preventing your eyeliner from smearing. You could be doing the above and not getting the actual results that you want simply because of your individual skin type. When I worked as a makeup artist for one of the top makeup brands on the planet, I found myself doing this trick often.

First and foremost, you want to take your eyeliner of choice and apply it to the back of your hand. If you are right handed, use the back of your left hand. If you are left handed, use the back of your right hand. You can use any eyeliner you want for this trick. I love to use gel the most.

Secondly, you want to add some concealer. If you are using concealer in a tube, 1-2 squeezes will do. If you are using any other applicators, 2-3 applications will do. Add them to the liner you are using.

Thirdly, you want to mix them together. You want to mix as generously as possibly simply because you are going to apply the end result as eyeliner.

Just follow these simple steps to prevent your eyeliner from smearing and you will be fine.
