Located in the heart of Dallas, Texas, Renee Rouleau is a celebrity esthetician who has created a brand based on every skin type. Although she travels often, her passion is skin and being able to make people look and feel better about themselves. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Renee directly about her skin care brand, her spa, and Demi Lovato. Here is what she had to say...
(Q) Hello Renee. How are you? It is wonderful to meet you!
Hello Sarah. I am great. Thanks. Thank you for thinking of me for this feature.
(Q) I heard about you through a dear friend of mine who has incredible skin. She was telling me about you. She was telling me that your products have saved her skin.
That is wonderful.
(Q) Can you tell me a little more about your line of skin care? Tell me more about you, as well and your inspiration to create your own skin care line.
Sure. I have been an esthetician for 27 years. Although I have a title of all sorts, I often referred to myself as a celebrity esthetician and skin care expert. The name of my company is Renee Rouleau Skincare. I was inspired by grandmother who was a hair dresser and owner of a hair salon, so I grew up in the beauty environment. She was a huge role model to me. She was also an entrepreneur back in the day, when women were not entrepreneurs so to speak. I currently have two skin care spas in Dallas where we do a variety of skin care services. We don't partner with a doctor or anything. It is all exclusively Renee Rouleau. We do facials, chemical peels, acne treatments, etc. We do biobrasion, which is the next generation of microdermabrasion. We do different lifting treatments, etc. Generally non-evasive.
So, I have two locations in Dallas. I still take clients every other Wednesday in one of my locations. I have other estheticians that work for me. I also do pop-up locations from the East coast to the West coast, so every three months (or quarterly) I head to Los Angeles and I take celebrity clients for a few days and then I do the same in New York, as well. LA and NYC are not actual Renee Rouleau locations, but I do travel to these places for clients.
I have a skin care line called Renee Rouleau Skincare. It is based on the concept of nine different skin types. Based upon my own discovery. General skin care companies have anywhere from three to five. They will do: dry, normal, oily, etc. Maybe they will have a sensitive line or an acne line or something like that. Most skin care lines are very limiting, I believe because they use very generic skin types where they will simply say 'suitable for all skin types' and I believe that every skin is unique and different. There is no such thing as one size fits all. I developed my line based on these nine different skin types that I have determined.
I have about 75 products in my line and I am always coming out with new products, as well. I am always updating products and I sell exclusively in my two skin care spas in Dallas and online. I have had an online store for quite sometime. We have incredible volume. We have skin type quizzes which help determine the products right for your skin. I have also written over a thousand blog posts about skin which can be found on the website.
(Q) I want to ask you, what are the best selling products right now? What are the most popular products that you sell?
Our most popular products. I will go with the top five. Our sunscreen with SPF 30. It's for everyone who has had trouble finding sunscreen. Whether it is because it breaks them out or being too heavy or greasy, etc. The sunscreen is incredibly popular because the formula works well with their skin. The Vitamin C & E Treatment is another best seller. It's a serum and is great way to not only hydrate your skin, but brighten it too. It treats discoloration, etc. Another product is our Anti-Cyst Treatment. In fact, I would say this is our best seller. You don't see many products that treat cystic acne and there really isn't a lot you can usually do for cysts because they are under the surface. This product really reduces inflammation and the cystic bumps under the skin. It is hands down, our #1 best selling product because it works well. Then, the at-home triple berry smoothing peel. It has about five different acids in it and allows people to get a gentle exfoliation. We have a product called BHA Clarifying Serum. It is a serum that is really good for breakouts and is really good for blackheads. It is great for smoothing and soothing the skin. All of these products have celebrity ties, as well.
(Q) What are the most popular services that you do in your spas?
I know that the Biobrasion is very popular. It's the next generation of microdermabrasion. Instead of using crystals, you use a diamond head tip with a suction. It really exfoliates the skin nicely. Then, we do it with the skin peel. We have about five different Biobrasion treatments right now. We have one for the clearing, for the brightening, for the hydrating, and one for the sensitive skin. There is another one, but I cannot think of it off the tip of my head.
(Q) That is amazing. It really makes me want to visit your spa the next time I am in Dallas. In fact, I am totally going to visit. This brings me to a really interesting question that I wanted to ask you. How important is exfoliating to the skin?
Exfoliation is very important because it clears up an array of issues. It helps fade brown spots, it helps fade breakout marks, it helps smooth and soften fine lines, it helps with dry skin, it is good to tricking your skin into acting young again, it promotes cell turnover, etc. It does a lot of wonderful things. It is important because it increases change in the skin. Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing are the basics you need to maintain your skin, but if you want to really make change and improve, you have to exfoliate. This will create the effectiveness of your daily skin care routine and show amazing results, as well.
(Q) I have a question, say someone does a regular regime of cleansing and moisturizing, but they do not tone their skin. What can actually happen if they don't tone their skin?
Well nothing catastrophic will happen. Toners are very important because they can enhance your skin care routine. For example; when you cleanse your skin, then you apply moisturizer - you are sealing in the minerals that are found in tap water. When you think of your shower door and you get that white, cruddy stuff on your glass shower door? Well, when you use a toner, you are actually getting rid of that white residue. You won't be sealing in drying chlorine and minerals into your skin. Using a toner will get rid of those and will not be dehydrating like the minerals. When you leave your toner on while wet and then apply a serum, it will actually lock in all of those ingredients. Kind of like giving your skin an extra drink of moisture. It is key to make sure that your toner is alcohol-free.
(Q) I have to ask, what do your celebrity clients, as well as, regular people say to you. When they tell you about how amazing your work is or how amazing your products are. How does this make you feel? What is the most memorable testimonial that you have ever received?
It makes me feel good hearing this. As for testimonial, I would have to say last year. Demi Lovato is one of my clients. She was featured in People Magazine in a special about stars without makeup. She was also interviewed and talked about how she used all Renee Rouleau products, she mentioned what her favorite one was, and even talked about how my skin care products made her pores literally disappear overnight, etc. It was very exciting that she mentioned me. It was really nice that she revealed herself with no makeup.
(Q) I know and she is such a beautiful girl with amazing skin.
(Q) I have to ask, do you have any plans of adding a makeup line?
No. My area of expertise is skin. Makeup is a completely different area.
(Q) Do you test on animals?
Absolutely not. We do NOT test on animals.
(Q) For all of those skin care lovers and beauty enthusiasts reading this interview, what would you like them to know? What is next for Renee Rouleau?
You are just never sure what the future will hold. We are constantly evolving. A lot of people have approached me and asked me if I intend to open up spas elsewhere or are you going to start selling in department stores. I could easily sell in a department store, but the problem is if I do all of these things for expansion, my world would be less about skin and more about business. To expand and be a household name is more about business, so I have chosen to really keep it about the skin. I write all of those blog posts myself and I do that as a service for people who have skin problems and/or who are looking to change their skin for the better. I am very passionate about what I do and have a strong desire to help others. I want to keep focus on helping others with their skin. So, what is next is anything that will help people with their skin and to help people love what they see when they look in the mirror.
