Old Hollywood glamour is always in style and one of the most iconic decades for beauty and fashion was the 1950’s. We’ve seen various inspired looks from this era celebrated in music videos, (Beyonce’, Raphael Saadiq and Christina Aguilera for example), gala events and many a celebrity is using this epic time of glam as inspiration in beauty and fashion, both on and off the red carpet. Beauty during this time was soft, sexy and subtle. Make-up was polished with bright rouged lips, full lashes, perfectly sculpted brows and emphasis on a woman’s cheekbones. The outcome was to look effortless and classic, even though getting the look accomplished definitely may not have been. One of my personal favorite looks? The gorgeous 50’s inspired loose wave.
This look is so Marilyn Monroe! The hair over the eye is bewitching and tantalizing. The waves really go perfectly when paired with bright red lipstick and definitely make a woman stand out at any formal event. If you don’t know how to do this look yourself, I’ve got a step by step walk through to accomplish this hairdo right at home and it’s a lot simpler than you may think.
Make sure to wear this style with an off center, to the side part. The overall look is easily achieved using heated curlers or a wide or medium barrel curling iron to make loose, spiral like waves. Make the side part first before you begin curling.
Once the curls are there, hold the roots of your hair and finger comb the bottoms to loosen the curl into a soft wave. Then, using a large paddle brush, begin in each section (front first) to brush the hair from root to tip. Once you get to the ends, use the brush and your fingers to flip the hair up into a large, simple loose wave. Again, you can use your fingers to grasp the hair in large sections and smooth any remaining curl out so that the wave falls naturally off to the side.
You can use bobby pins or a decorative clip to pin back one side and accentuate the larger portion of hair that will fall over the eye. The look you will achieve will be amazingly soft, smooth and very sexy. Use a light hairspray if necessary for added hold and you’re ready to hit the town in your retro, 50’s inspired hairdo.
