It often seems that one year all the film makers seem to get the same idea. In 2006 there were magicians to be had in The Illusionist and The Prestige, 2008 was about WWII with Defiance and Valykerie (soon followed by Inglorious Basterds in 2009), and now its revisionist fairytales.
It started with Alice in Wonderland in 2012 followed by Red Riding Hood in 2011. Then in 2012 we got, not one, but two Snow white films (Mirror Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman). In 2013 so far there’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunter, and Jack the Giant Slayer which are still playing in the Sacramento area.
There have already been reports of a Little Mermaid film and a Cinderella film but now it would seem that Beauty and the Beast is the next up. Warner Brothers has been in development with Guillermo Del Toro on a Beauty and the Beast film. Presumably much darker than the animated classic.
Now Disney has hired Joe Ahearne to write a Beauty and the Beast screenplay for them. Joe Ahearn wrote the screenplay for Danny Boyle’s latest film Trance and directed some episodes of Doctor Who. It’s likely that the script he churns out will also not be a typical children’s story.
Del Toro’s project has been slowly churning for awhile with few updates. Whether they decide to abandon the project or speed up production is anybody’s guess. One can only hope that the resulting films are entertaining since it’s likely that audiences will be seeing a lot about Beauty and her Beast for awhile.
