The 31st annual “Gathering of Nations” (GON) Powwow got off to a great start this Friday afternoon on April 25, 2014. The first “grand entry” in the “Pit” arena at Albuquerque, N.M. was packed with audience members as well as drummers & dancers. The gates were opened at 9 a.m. as fans lined up to buy their tickets for the annual powwow. The One day pass is $17. The Two day pass is $34.

The Albuquerque city mayor named Richard J. Berry welcomed everyone to the GON. Archbishop Sheehan lead a prayer invocation. Actress, Ashley Callingbull spoke about last night's “Miss Indian World Pageant” which she served as judge for the traditional category. The speaking category competition for all the “Miss Indian World” contestants was held at “Stage 49” outside on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Roscoe Pond will head to “Stage 49” to watch native pop singer Inez Jasper at 6:30 p.m. He will also watch the second “Grand Entry” at 7 p.m. Then, he will go back to “Stage 49' to see “49 Laughs” with James & Ernie plus Tatanka Means at 8:30 p.m. Gay native comedian Charlie Ballard will appear at 9:30 p.m.

Native elder actor & powwow dancer Saginaw Grant was interviewed for the 2014 “Gathering of Nations” program magazine. It was written by Harlan McCosato. There is also an article written on Comanche elder LaDonna Harris who adopted actor, Johnny Depp last year. She will be honored at the GON for her work as a Native American advocate.

Here is what's happening tonight for Friday April 25. At the 2014 GON.

  • 7 p.m. The second “Grand Entry

  • 8 p.m. Competition dancing for native elders 70 years & older.

  • 8:15 p.m. Special dance competition for the “Miss Indian World” contestants.

  • 8:40 p.m. Singing & dancing competitions in all adult categories.

  • 12 a.m. GON will hold a “Midnight” special called the “Smoke Dance Contest.”

  • 1 a.m. GON closes for the night.
