UNCUT

WHEN THE RAIN COMES: WLIW (Channel 21) on New York's Long Island will air "Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles" at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 14 and 1:30 p.m. Aug. 15. The show features Joe Bithorn (George Harrison), Ralph Castelli (Ringo Starr), Joey Curatolo (Paul McCartney) and Steve Landes (John Lennon), plus Mark Lewis  on keyboards, percussion. Songs performed include “Hey Jude,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Come Together,” “Twist and Shout” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” Rain brings their Beatle tribute to Broadway from Oct. 19 through Jan. 2.

SIMON AND HARRISON: In one of the columns we wrote about Paul McCartney's Gershwin Award White House performance, one of the comments mentioned that Paul Simon's concert had been released on DVD. We looked over the track list and noticed that Art Garfunkel played with him on one song. Being a Simon & Garfunkel fan, we had to order it.  (Stevie Wonder is also among the performers with Simon.) When we received it, however, we found another nice surprise -- it also has the clip of George Harrison and Paul Simon doing "Homeward Bound" that originally aired on "Saturday Night Live in the '70s. Unfortunately, on the Blu-ray version at least, it isn't the high resolution of the rest of the show. The regular DVD version, however, shouldn't be as noticeable. If you like Paul Simon, it's worth getting.

CHAMPAGNE AND AUTOGRAPHS: Great story on the Meet the Beatles for Real blog about a boy who owns the champagne bottle used in the "Penny Lane" video. It's autographed by all the Beatles except Ringo.

BASEBALL AND BEATLES: Friday night's fireworks show at the Oakland A's baseball game will feature music by the Beatles.

McCARTNEY MAGAZINE ALERT: The August issue of Uncut continues its Beatles solo series with Paul McCartney. The cover headline reads "Paul McCartney: My return to basics." In the story, he is quoted as saying "I needed to get back to me. I'd gotten too far away from who I was." The article is about his life during the early years of his solo career.
