Beatles' 'Hold Your Hand' changed everything, but was part of a revolution

While the release of the iconic Beatles song “I Want To Hold Your Hand” 50 years ago on Dec. 26, 1963 was a big moment in their success in America, Allan Kozinn, author of the new ebook Got That Something! How the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" Changed Everything,” says nothing could have stopped the Beatles, even an “It's a Wonderful Life” scenario where the song didn't exist.

“I don't know that the 'It's a Wonderful Life' comparison really works,” he said. “In England, 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' sold a million copies before it was released -- before anyone heard it -- so clearly, whatever their fifth single was would have been the hit that 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' was. Unless, of course, they had turned out something dreadful, in which case those million buyers would have been upset and perhaps Capitol would have reneged on its deal. But come on - how likely is that scenario?

“They had the Midas touch at that point. Their sense of the perfect song to write was impeccable, so if it hadn't been this one, more likely than not it would have been something equally appealing, and the story would have been the same.”
