Beatles Grammy round-up: Two historic wins; related awards fall short

The Beatles has two big reasons to celebrate on Grammy Awards night Sunday even before the national TV broadcast started.

In the group of early pre-telecast awards, the Beatles' stereo box set won for Best Historical Album. Paul McCartney's "Helter Skelter" from "Good Evening New York City" also won for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance

The Beatles' most recent win was in 2009 for the Long Form Video "All Together Now," the documentary about the Beatles' Las Vegas "Love" show. In a quirk of fate, "All Together Now" will debut on iTunes this week

For Paul McCartney, the wait from his last Grammy win was a little longer -- back to 1979 for the Wings song "Rockestra Theme" in the category of Best Rock Instrumental.

The Beatles issued a press release Sunday announcing their award, but it contained no quotes from either Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr. Apple Corps CEO Jeff Jones was in Los Angeles for the awards. However, Paul McCartney was not -- he was in England at the BAFTA Awards and presented an award on that show on the BBC.

Two Beatle-related nominations didn't fare so well. The limited edition version of Klaus Voormann's wonderful solo album "A Sideman's Journey" lost out to the White Stripes' "Under Great Northern Lights" in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package category. (See two stories about the Voormann album here and here. Also, Ringo Starr and a few friends attended a special tribute to Voormann. Read our report with exclusive pics here.)

And in the Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) category, Herbie Hancock's cover of "Imagine" lost to "Baba Yetu" by Christopher Tin and the Soweto Gospel Choir and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from his "Calling All Dawns" album. However, the entire "Imagine Project" album won "Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals."

And while Paul was winning a Grammy, he was at the BAFTAs in London presenting, as seen on BBC America...accompanied by Nancy and daughter Mary!
