Beatles fan festival Abbey Road on the River this month to feature star search, movie premiere

What organizers are calling "the world's biggest Beatles singing competition" is among the events planned for this year's Abbey Road on the River May 27-31 at the Belvedere and Galt House Hotel & Suites in Louisville, KY.

The grand-prize winner for “They’re Gonna Make a Big Star Outta Me" in the age 16 and older category will be able to pick between two prizes – a Country Gentleman guitar from Gretsch (the same model played by George Harrison) valued at over $3,000, or a trip to Liverpool, including airfare for two, four nights at the Hard Days Night Hotel, and the opportunity to perform at the Cavern Club in Liverpool where the Beatles performed. The runner-up will get the prize not chosen by the first-place winner.

The 2009 winner, University of Louisville student Chris Smallwood, will perform at the 2010 festival at 2:05 p.m. May 28.

Preliminaries begin at 4 p.m. May 28. The final six contestants will perform live at 6 p.m. May 30 on the Main Lawn Stage.

The competition is limited to 150 contestants ages 16 and older, and is open to any Abbey Road on the River ticket holder. For complete competition rules and entry details, go to http://www.abbeyroadontheriver.com/contestrules.php.

A separate competition will be held for those 15 and under. The winner in this category will receive a Rocky Guitar valued at over $700. The runners up will receive gift certificates for Beatles merchandise.

The festival will also feature the United States premiere of "Let Him Be," a Canadian film written, directed and composed by Peter McNamee. The movie tells the story of two film students who find a video of an old man who bears more than a passing resemblance to John Lennon and they decide to investigate whether Lennon could indeed be alive. The film will be screened at 11 a.m. May 28 at the Galt House Hotel and 11 a.m. May 29 during the festival. A Q&A session with director McNamee will follow.

The documentary film "The Mayor of Strawberry Fields," a chronicle of the life of a homeless man who has been decorating John Lennon's "Imagine" memorial in Central Park for the past 15 years, will also be shown during the festival.

Abbey Road on the River, a five-day music festival, will be held at the Belvedere and Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky from May 27th to May 31st. Tickets are on sale at www.abbeyroadontheriver.com and selected Louisville retail outlets. A second festival will be held at the Gaylord Hotel in Washington, D.C. Sept. 2-6.
