Beatles Day fever building: Remasters sighting, last-minute buys, TV alerts

A few quick items:

  • Entertainment Tonight  interviewed both Paul and Ringo together. There's a picture of host Mary Hart and Paul McCartney on their website. Paul's review of the remastered CDs to ET: "If I'm listening to it, it sounds like I'm in the room on the session -- it's organic. I mean, if I'm listening to John sing 'Nowhere Man' or something, it's like I'm sitting next to him, it's like, this is great. This is really good."
  • The Beatles are everywhere! James in the UK wrote us he found all the Beatles remasters in Tesco, a UK supermarket.
  • Dhani Harrison will be one of the guests on "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" Tuesday on NBC in the U.S. (Check your local listings for the correct time.)
  • Target is offering a $5 gift card with the purchase of two Beatles remastered CDs. Various Best Buys will have in-store DJs, giveaways and live music. Various Blockbusters will also have special events. As we wrote in our latest Beatle news briefs, Blockbuster in Seatlle will have a live show by Crème Tangerine.
  • If you're wondering about buying the box sets in stores on Wednesday (and several people have asked), it's best to check locally and find out. Our local Best Buy told us the boxes are only available online. Our local Walmart didn't think they'd have them, either. But your local CD store might be a better bet and we've heard of people finding them there. If you have success (or not), let us know what works for you or doesn't.

I've received an email from Borders, with a tracking number, showing that my Mono box set will be delivered by Tuesday at 10:30am!

  • Wilbox 2 years ago

Now you've made me nervous that I won't be able to walk out of my CD store tomorrow with a box set under my arm?

  • Melody 2 years ago

My Best Buy circular said they would have the stereo box, but that the mono boxes would only be at select stores, with the exception of New Jersey, which the fine print said, all stores in NJ would have mono boxes... The last time I saw George's CD advertised in the circular, my local Best Buy said they never had it!

I went to an indie store yesterday and picked up the mono box. They also have the stereo box, but I can't afford both. I couldn't resist picking up Abbey Road, Let It Be, Magical Mystery Tour, and Past Masters too. I don't have those in the original CDs. The clerk told me that it has been frustrating for them too because EMI severely underestimated the interest in the mono sets. They had ordered 70 and got 10. He was hoping they were going to get 10 more later in the week but said that people who were waiting for street date to go to bricks and mortar stores were going to be disappointed. The online community has done a wonderful job of alerting fans that they can ask ahead of time and a lot of the smaller retailers will sell. So do check out your indie store. This one had told me 3 weeks ago they didn't know if they were going to be able to get any so I'm glad I checked back again.

Wilbox, I think we're in the same boat. I didn't want to pre-order b/c I thought orders wouldn't ship until 9/9 (wrong!). I think we'll be OK, we should find a stereo set among the big box retailers.

And given what I was the first to report -- that the mono sets should become more available eventually -- that should make things easier for everyone.

My local Best Buy said they'll have some stereo sets tomorrow. Also, a local Barnes and Noble had 1 that they're holding for me. The person at BN said they're a hot item and that I was lucky to call when I did. Happy hunting!

In my small area (50,000 people, Pullman, WA/Moscow ID) the only small 'record store' isn't getting the boxes unless people pre-order, Hastings is getting some stereo and two mono boxes (one reserved for me!), Shopko has a stand, but they tell me they don't have the discs/boxes in the back and to ask in a few days (yeah, right), and the guy at Walmart needed to come off his medication before answering my question about whether or not they are for sale. I could drive 80 miles and get them today from a cool record store in Spokane, but I'm going to wait for Hastings tomorrow (which I feel lame about - I love to buy from small stores instead).

    WELL.

There will be no Beatles Box Set for Wilbox today. If JB Hi Fi didn't get any from EMI, then I'm going to go right ahead and assume that nobody in Brisbane did. Which is hilarious.

This is the worst Beatles day ever :o(

    (My wallet thanks me, though.)

well you can get lucky, I did not pre-order, walked into a store today and asked if they had anything, and I walked out with the MONO BOX SET pre-order to pick up in the morning. I saw it so I know it is waiting for me. $360 lighter.

Counter top display was up and CD's for sale at the local 7-11 this afternoon! I had pick up one (Rubber Soul) just to get me through until Wednesday. They were also on the shelves at Walmart as of 8:00 PM.

BEST BUY IN OKC NW 63, HAD NO BOX SETS AT 6PM AND COULDN'T TELL ME IF THEY HAD ANY AT STORE OPENING. NO OTHER BB IN CITY HAD ANY. LOCAL FYE STORE SAID THEY GOT ONE SET OF THE 5 PRE=ORDERED. NEITHER HAD ANY IDEA IF/WHEN THEY WOULD GET MORE. ONE EMPLOYEE SAID EMI DIDN'T PRODUCE ENOUGH, MENTIONED THE 10k NUMBER. CALLED WALMART-ZERO AND NO IDEA. BARNES & NOBLE GOT 3..... WTS IS GOING ON APPLE/EMI?

  • Wilbox 2 years ago

Yeah I am a little annoyed by this whole thing now. I don't mind missing out in the first round, I'll pick up my box sets soon enough I'm sure (they sound great in the CD store!!), but what I am annoyed about is that, even if I had pre-ordered 6 months ago, there just AREN'T ANY BOXES to go round!

How can it be that the biggest music retailers in the third biggest City in Australia, (of 2 million people), has literally NO box sets to offer customers? (and "won't have for maybe the next 10 days, and even then I can't promise anything"). I'd love to know what the situation is like in Sydney and Melbourne? EMI bungled this one BIG time.

I wonder if the Magical Mystery Tour typo has anything to do with it? Paul did apparently spend tens of thousands of dollars re-printing the Anthology 3 booklet when he decided to re-order the tracks at the 11th hour, so, maybe?

  • LM-Fan 2 years ago

Best Buy screwed my Beatle day up big time. What is their definition of "Pre Order" anyway. You give them all your info and you think your covered. But then the big day comes around and nothing. No communication either. All I can say is they've lost my business forever.
