'Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963' still on top at iTunes; author analyzes set

The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963” remained as the top-selling rock album on iTunes on Dec. 19 for the third straight. The album was released on Tuesday and shot right to the top of the best-selling rock albums on iTunes on the first day of its release, has held that position for three days since its release. Not bad for an album released with no publicity or fanfare. The collection of studio outtakes, BBC tracks and demos has only been available throughout the world on iTunes.

Doug Sulpy, editor of The 910, has analyzed “The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963” and told us the studio outtakes are improved from previous underground releases.

“The takes of "Misery," "A Taste Of Honey" and "Do You Want To Know A Secret" haven't been available in stereo before,” he said.

But he was critical of the BBC radio material.

“The BBC performances, which, of course, are the bulk of the release, are very disappointing. The vast majority of them are identical to the bootlegs, with a handful that can be considered upgrades only because they've been digitally cleaned up, and only a couple that can be considered true upgrades ("She Loves You" from Dec. 26th "From Us To You", and the complete "Love Me Do" from the January 26th "Saturday Club" for instance).

“Clearly,” he said, “less effort was given to compiling these tracks than the recent "On Air: Live At The BBC Vol. 2" CD, even though these are costing us more.”

He also said there was no change to the two demos at the end, though he said “Bad To Me” had been filtered with noise reduction.

The latest issue of the 910 from Fall 2013, which reviews Paul McCartney's “NEW” album and an underground release that collects fragments of Beatles songs that have surfaced among collectors is available through his website.
