THE WHALE (1970) & CELTIC REQUIEM (1971) by John Tavener (a 2-on-1 CD)
Back in the late Sixties, John Tavener was championed by John & Yoko, and befriended by Ringo Starr. Apple's recordings of The Whale, his avant-garde oratorio, and Celtic Requiem, written for soprano, orchestra and children’s choir, were his first ever full-length releases, and remain extraordinary examples of British contemporary classical music.
This remastered CD also contains two supporting pieces, ‘Nomine Jesu’ (‘In The Name Of Jesus’) and ‘Coplas’ (‘Verses’), that were originally issued on the Celtic Requiem album in 1970, and were later reworked into the major Tavener composition of 1972 Ultimos Ritos. For this new CD, Sir John has re-presented The Whale as it was originally published in the score. Instead of spanning two tracks as per all previous releases, the oratorio has now been split into its seven discrete sections, allowing the listener for the first time to follow on record the individual elements of this early and most innovative work.
RADHA KRISHNA TEMPLE (1971) by the Radha Krishna Temple (London)
The Radha Krishna Temple album , which was recorded by the London chapter of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and was produced by George Harrison. The album is a collection of devotional chants and prayers to Krishna (another name for God) and to the movement’s own divinely-inspired spiritual masters. It spawned two Top 30 UK singles, ‘Hare Krishna Mantra’ (No. 12) and ‘Govinda’ (No. 23), and said George: “It was the greatest fun of all, really, to see Krishna on Top Of The Pops”. Krishna Consciousness can be defined as a “process of plain living and high thinking” that leads to spiritual knowledge, self-realization, as well as the greater goal of peace and happiness in the wider world.
This Remastered CD includes one Bonus Track:
• ‘Namaste Sarawati Devi’ / previously unreleased

This is all very exciting! The only thing I am not happy with are the tracks that will be available exclusively as Digital Downloads. I am the kind of person who likes to buy physical CDs. I won't mind if the songs offered exclusively as Digital Downloads can be purchased separately. What I mean by that is that I hope you don't have to go to iTunes and buy the complete album to get them like you would have had to do with some of the George Harrison demo tracks. I bought the physical CDs and had to find an online file sharing site to get the album-only exclusives offered by iTunes because I was not going to pay for the album again just to get one song. Does anyone have any speculations as to what they will do in this regard?
If I was going to buy only one of the Badfinger CDs, which one should it be?
(I'm definitely going to get the Apple compilation but I'd like one of the Badfinger CDs too and could use some advice from some of you experts.)
Digital downloads - Sometimes it's a package deal early on, then you can get the individual tracks later on. Then of course, sometimes not. . .
Badfinger - "Straight Up" , that's my favorite by far, and I know I'm not alone . . .
Nice to see some rare tracks on COME AND GET IT: THE BEST OF APPLE RECORDS . . .

I hope the digital only tracks will be made available separately other wise that's uncool, the Apple greatest hits is good as there are rare tracks on there, so all in all a nice treat from Apple.
Wow! Wow! Wow! I love it! At last we get The Sundown Playboys, Hot Chocolate and Trash!!! What a compilation this is!! But where is Yoko Ono, Elephants Memory and David Peel? Or the individual ex-Beatles?? (a collection with the last four would really be the greatest!)
The other re-releases also mostly includes tracks that makes me want to buy them again...
All those Badfinger extras sound great. And, I can't wait to hear STRAIGHT UP sounding clear and vibrant as opposed to the weak, muddy mess the original CD release sounds like.
BTW, if you are looking for ONE Badfinger CD to take with you on the Desert Island, it has to be STRAIGHT UP, at least of the Apple releases.
WISH YOU WERE HERE is right up there, but that was later, on Warner Brothers.
It'll be a kick to finally hear those obscure A-sides on the compo, but I still say we need a Complete Apple Singles A's & B's box (with or without the solo Fabs).
Can ya REALLY have a "best of Apple" non-Beatles collection without "No Matter What" by Badfinger ? It looks like Apple wanted to make it a bit of a combination of hits & rarities. My suggestion would have been to put all the "digital download tracks" plus the A-side/B-side rarites in a separate set, and made the hits set a bit stronger, perhaps with representation from more artists like Elephant's Memory, etc
I hope these CDs are reasonably priced, but I suppose I might as well ask the Beatles to reunite. When will the music industry wake up and realize that those of us who like to purchase CDs are TIRED of paying ridiculous $14+ prices for CDs that should be sold for $8. Reissues especially should be cheaply priced given that they're asking people to repurchase music that many of them already bought once.
As an Apple Records rock historian...I want you all to know that the David Peel "The Pope Smokes Dope" was released and remastered on Orange Records in 2007.
Apple will never re-release this.
You can buy it now.
Check the Peel Myspace for details.
Tell em Jeffery sent you..
Yeah, it's odd that EMI is offering the extra tracks as digital downloads only, when the Beatles' catalog isn't available digitally.
I bought a lot of songs from MSN at one point and these songs will not load on to my Zune, so I'm kind of bummed with digital downloads. Yet, I want these extra tracks. I'll probably pick and choose. I rather pay extra for a disc with all of them on it.
You can see that EMI is in cleanup mode. How long have the truest fans waited to see some of these materials and the bonuses? Get ready for more--hopefully Beatles related--as it has been reported that EMI has been sold to, believe it or not, CITIBANK! I am starting to believe conspiracy theories I once denounced
