Beatles 'Abbey Road' suitmaker's brand up for sale

British menswear company Crombie is selling the Tommy Nutter brand of clothing, according to the Financial Times (registration required). It was designer Nutter who made suits worn by some of the Beatles on the cover of the "Abbey Road" album, according to the Financial Times. Nutter died in 1992.

Paul McCartney, John Lennon and Ringo Starr all wore suits on the cover, while George Harrison was casually dressed in jeans. Although the Financial Times story said Nutter made all three suits, according to Russ Lease, Ringo's suit, which Lease owns, was made by Ringo's personal tailor, Herbert Keith and not Nutter.

Nutter's Savile Row shop had a further Beatles connection because it was financed by Brian Epstein and NEMS stable member Cilla Black and Peter Brown of the Beatles' Apple Corps company.

Nutter made clothes for members of the Rolling Stones as well. Mick Jagger wore a Nutter suit to his 1971 wedding to Bianca Pérez-Mora Macias, according to the report. He also designed Jack Nicholson's costume for his role as The Joker in the 1989 film "Batman."

The deal includes some original garments and designs, though the story doesn't say if any of them were associated with the Beatles or the Stones.
