Beatle news briefs: Sony pushes to stop 'Lost' lawsuit; '200 Motels' back on DVD

Sony has requested a judge dismiss a lawsuit by Ace Arts over “The Beatles: The Lost Concert” documentary, the Hollywood Reporter reported Dec. 10. The dismissal request made on Monday was because Sony said there was a similar suit in the UK, the paper said. Sony has been accused of interfering with the release of the film, which Ace Arts contends is in the public domain.

Paul appreciates it!: Shari B. Ellis' fan video for Paul McCartney's song “Appreciate” that we wrote about Nov. 28 was mentioned by Paul Nov. 10 on his official Twitter account. “Have you seen @ohshari's video for Appreciate? We love it! Who do you #appreciate being in your life?”, the Twitter post read. Congrats, Shari!

You want rumors?: This week has been full of speculation and reports on what may be coming Beatles-wise, like the release of the Dylan 30th anniversary show capped by the report (and that's all it is at this writing) that iTunes will be releasing a bootleg Beatles set next week. An earlier report this week that got a lot of buzz online was found on the Break-Thru website about possible releases and events during the Beatles 50th. Some things on the site, like the mono vinyl box, have been mentioned previously, but others, like the “1” DVD compilation of videos have not. So believe the new stuff or not? One longtime source we talked to says they asked a person who is supposed to know what's in the pipeline and were told that, other than what's been announced, they'd heard of none of the rest of it.

"Hello, possums!": Stella McCartney's Christmas lighting ceremonies usually turn out to be parties. This year's featured Dame Edna. No Paul in attendance, according to the pictures she posted, though.

On your DVD and CD racks: Frank Zappa's “200 Motels,” the unusual film that features an appearance by Ringo Starr, is available again on DVD on the Tony Palmer label. Also out recently is a new album by former Ringo All-Starr Dave Edmunds called “Again.” Coming in January is the last album by the late Apple recording artist Jackie Lomax called “Against All Odds.” There's also a new Badfinger greatest hits compilation mentioned by Beatlefan's Bill King on Facebook called “Icon – Timeless Musical Legacy.” Songs include “Come And Get It,” “Day After Day,” “No Matter What,” “Baby Blue” and “Without You.”

On your magazine rack: Rolling Stone's “Paul McCartney Special Collectors Edition” features a collection of vintage magazine articles, pictures and interviews going back to 1970, plus what seems to be mandatory (for RS), a list. This one gives one man's opinion on the 40 greatest Macca songs. The vintage interviews are the best part, of course, along with the different past spins by him and the writers. Worth getting.
