Beatle news briefs: Sean gets a birthday surprise; Yoko interview in the bag

LENNON MANIA: The buildup to last Saturday's John Lennon 70th birthday celebrations didn't quite measure to the craziness of the Beatles remasters in '09, but that didn't mean it was quiet. The ceremonies in Liverpool, New York and Los Angeles were all beautiful, as was the one in Iceland. Jody Denberg told us "Ringo & Barbara & Olivia attended the Tower Lighting party, which was in a building on a top floor with a balcony. And after seeing the show and Ringo and Olivia singing "Give Peace a Chance" with a cast that also included the Peace Grant winners, there was a well attended surprise birthday party for Sean. Ringo, his stepdaughter and Olivia were amongst the first to arrive. After Yoko got there, and then Sean, they hung out for a little at that table. Bob Gruen took some photos. Kyoko and her kids were there. Mark Ronson, too. (He played on "Mindtrain." Someone yelled out happy birthday to Sean from the audience and later a cake was rolled out for him."

BEATLEFEST WEST: It was an interesting weekend in more ways than one. We went to San Francisco for BeatleFest West. (We'd driven up there Saturday, but the traffic from the Blue Angels air show, which was happening Saturday and Sunday, made parking impossible and we had to leave. Sunday, we took rapid transit (smart!) and made it. The show was quiet Sunday (as opposed to the Blue Angels outside), but reports said it was much busier Saturday night for the Plastic Fauxno Band, a special John Lennon tribute on his 70th birthday. The Return, pictured here, was one of the acts who put on an interesting show Sunday. Gareth of BeatlesRadio.com said he plans to do another show with the Plastic Fauxno Band in the future.

THE BEATLES AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN: The Madison Square Garden website has some great photos of the solo Beatles in various concerts over the years. These include the August, 1972 concert by John Lennon, the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh with George Harrison and Ringo Starr andPaul McCartney and Wings in May, 1976. The website is at http://www.msg.com/photos/the-beatles-in-concert/

BRITISH BEATLES FAN CLUB: Issue 38 of the British Beatles Fan Club magazine features a great picture of John Lennon and George Harrison taken by Astrid Kirchherr on the cover and reports on Beatles Week 2010 in Liverpool, Ringo's 70th birthday celebration and Ringo tour reports. For more information, go to www.britishbeatlesfanclub.co.uk

SHANNON DRAWING LENNON: We have an exclusive picture of Beatles artist Shannon working on her drawing of ‘Lennon at 70’ with her personal assistant, Clorinda. This picture was taken after about only 1 1/2 hours of her starting with a canvas that only has a pencil sketch. You'll notice the painting of John in 1964 on the left. Besides May Pang and Dennis Ferrante being in attendance, Lori Burton, who was one of the 44th Street Fairies on "#9 Dream", was there.

TICKETS NOT TO HIDE: Theatre Within has announced that additonal tickets have been made available for its 30th Annual John Lennon Tribute concert, to be held at 8 p.m. Nov. 12 at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. YOKO INTERVIEW IN THE BAG: When Mark Critch of CBC-TV interviewed Yoko, he asked if he could do it in a bag. She agreed. You can see the interview at left.

Please. I'm begging you. Create a Yoko Ono Examiner. She's not a Beatle. She never was a Beatle. I don't come to the Beatles examiner to read about her stupid stunts. And I don't care about her interviews or her massive campaign to promote herself and wring as much money as she can out of Lennon's murder.

Why not create a separate examiner for her for those who do care.

I had to check to make sure I did not write this. Brilliantly put! Why has Paul (who was a Beatle - and a great one) been sent away from a Beatle site and yet yoko get all kinds of coverage here.
Love you Steve, but Yoko was not a Beatle and I find most of her crazy antics - well crazy.
Her finally telling the world that Paul did indeed try and get John and her back together after mocking him for saying it a few years back just cemented her insanity for me. She has spent her days trying to make Paul look bad and all to make herself look better as the "poor widow".
The nutcase even claimed it was 'reacist' for someone to ask her if she ever thought of moving out of the Dakota since John's murder. "Racist???" She is nuts.

Paul McCartney has not been sent away. He's been given a site of his own. There is Paul news here and there.

And as far as Yoko goes, with the Lennon birthday, there was a lot of news revolving around her. It's only natural she would be mentioned. At the minimum, she reissued the Lennon catalog.

I agree. Yoko was not a Beatle. With Olivia I get the feeling she is promoting George and his legacy with class and dignity. With Yoko I get the feeling she is promoting Yoko by any means necessary.

Of course. How else do you explain that Lennon's Box of Vision book includes just as many photos of Yoko as of John. How else do you explain her THREE concerts in recent weeks that supposedly were about honoring John in which she featured her music almost entirely except for Give Peace A Chance and Dear Yoko (a song about her!!) I have felt sorry for her in the past. But her almost obsessive self-promotion via Lennon's birthday and murder is just appalling.

I don't care what she does and I don't want to read anything she says on a Beatles site unless it relates to the Beatles. Not her solo career. Not her interviews about how she gets no attention and has been so picked on. Poor little multimillionairess.

"The Return, pictured here, was one of the acts who put on an interesting show Sunday"
    How was it "interesting"?

  • Steve Marinucci 1 year ago

I think the picture makes it obvious. They were a look-alike, sound-alike.

Just imagine if Paul had used the occasion of John's 70th to help publish a book about John in which half of the photos were of Paul. And then, imagine if Paul had organized a concert on John's 70th birthday in which Paul played almost entirely his own songs, rather than John's. I imagine critics would have torn him apart. Very interesting double standard.

I don't mind the Yoko news at all..but we certainly can leave May Pang out.

  • Steve Marinucci 1 year ago

Both Yoko and May Pang were part of John's life and what they do, especially in relation to John, should be mentioned. Because Yoko is his widow and has control of the Lennon archives, her activities especially are news. A lot of activities the past few weeks revolved around John's birthday. They needed to be mentioned and they were, as they should have been.

I agree. Yoko was the other half of John's sky, so...
