Beatle news briefs: Regis Philbin's brush with a Beatle; Kirshner's Fabs links

REGIS IN A ROMP: It's probably not high on his list of credits, but Regis Philbin, who announced his retirement Tuesday, played a role, literally, in Beatle history. He was among the ensemble cast in the film "Sextette", the 1978 comedy starring Mae West and co-starring Ringo Starr, and also featuring Keith Moon, Dom DeLuise, Tom Selleck and Tony Curtis. And it was Regis' daytime show, "Live With Regis & Kelly," that was supposed to feature an appearance by Ringo in 2008, but because the show wanted to cut the song down more than Ringo wanted, the appearance didn't happen.

RARE FILMS: On Jan. 27 from 6:30pm-9pm, author Richie Unterberger ("Unreleased Beatles") will present two hours of vintage film clips of British Invasion artists from 1964-67 at the Larkspur Public Library at 400 Magnolia Street (upstairs in the City Hall Council Chambers) in Larkspur. Included will be clips by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Yardbirds, Kinks, Animals, Zombies, Them, Manfred Mann, Small Faces, Donovan, Procol Harum, Pink Floyd, Gerry & the Pacemakers, the Pretty Things, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Petula Clark, the Hollies, the Moody Blues, the Troggs, the Spencer Davis Group, and others. Admission is free.

DON KIRSHNER'S ROCK CONCERT: Don Kirshner, who died Tuesday, hoped to make his own Beatles with the Monkees, but his groundbreaking music series "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" had a few Beatles connections. According to an episode guide on TVGuide.com, Kirshner had Paul McCartney, George Harrison's friend Gary Wright and the faux Beatles group Klaatu during the run of the show. (The not-so-reliable Wikipedia lists George Harrison as a guest, also.) At left is a video of Ringo Starr brother-in-law Joe Walsh (with a strictly '70s hairdo) on the show in 1975.
