Beatle news briefs: McCartney and band had trouble keeping warm in L.A.; Juber's busy spring

YES, IT WAS A COLD NIGHT AT THE BOWL: After we thawed out from our cold night at the Hollywood Bowl on March 31, we asked Paul McCartney guitarist Brian Ray how the band stayed managed to stay warm. "It was freakin COLD up there!!!," he said. "All of us, except ABE were talking about it between encores backstage." Ray said he himself was "leaping and running and trying to keep the fingers moving."

LAURENCE JUBER UPDATE: Laurence Juber emailed us, "I'm busy recording the Vol 2 follow-up my "LJ Plays The Beatles" (2000), then heading out for a Spring tour. I have a Seattle concert this weekend at the Triple Door, plus a guitar workshop at Dusty Strings. Both will feature some of my latest Beatles arrangements. The following weekend I'll be in Fort Lauderdale Fla. for the three-day Newport Guitar Festival. There will be some amazing examples of contemporary acoustic guitar building, as well as mini-concerts and workshops and an All Star Guitar Night on the 18th. In mid-May, I have a Midwest run that starts in Minneapolis and runs through Wisconsin, Chicago, Detroit and Lansing, then on to Toronto and the East Coast, including a special "Beatles, Wings and Six Strings" event at the Smithsonian on June 3rd." BEATLES BOOK RELEASED: A book of Beatles memories and photographs by the UK Daily Mirror is now available from Merseyshop.com. Called "Hello, Goodbye," it's subtitle says "The Beatles ... how the world's greatest band grew apart." It profiles the band between 1960-1970.

Ok, how cold was it at the Hollywood Bowl? 40s, 50s 60s 70s?

Every new Beatles book that comes out has some wording on the cover to the effect of: "Packed with rare and unseen images." I really wish someone could take a look at this latest book and tell me, definitively, if there are actually any new unseen images in it. I find it hard to believe, after 40 years, that these aren't the same old photos repackaged to sell yet another book. Or maybe instead of using shot No. 4 of the Beatles in strange costumes, they'll use shot no. 5.

Don't get me wrong: I'd love to see some new photos of the boys. I just think we've seen all there is by now. The only unseen photos that exist are in the private collections of John, Paul, George, and Ringo, and perhaps they (or their executors) don't want us to see such private photos.

what is the release date for Jubers new cd?

  • Steve Marinucci - Beatles Examiner 2 years ago

Melody: I didn't check, but I'd say somewhere in the '40s. An unseasonably cold weather system hit L.A. that day. Rain had been predicted that night, but it didn't happen.

Dee: You're correct -- there aren't a lot of vintage photos we haven't seen. But given that these are newspaper photos, it's possible that there are some in the book that they never printed.
