Beatle news briefs: Happy birthday, Sir George; Xmas iTunes mystery solved

WE SAY IT'S HIS BIRTHDAY: Sir George Martin is 85 years old today (Jan. 3). Happy birthday, Sir George!

BRIAN RAY TRIVIA: Our mention on Twitter last week of Chuck Berry and his performance with John Lennon on "The Mike Douglas Show" brought a comment from Brian Ray, who said he played on the show many years ago in a group called The Wild Hickory Nuts. He says they were backing up actress Cloris Leachman, whose son was on drums, and one of the songs they did was Carole King's "I Feel the Earth Move." According to TV Guide.com, other guests on the show included Lassie, comic Pat Cooper and singer Julie Budd. We couldn't locate any footage on YouTube and there's none on the only legit DVD of highlights from the show, called "Mike Douglas: Moments and Memories." (By the way, this DVD does have some highlights from John and Yoko's week-long appearance, but not the full week's broadcasts which we think should be released.)

ABBEY ROAD SUIT SELLS BIG: The iconic white suit John Lennon wore as he crossed Abbey Road on the cover of the Beatles album sold for a reported $46,000, according to various reports. The rusted green 1972 Chrysler station wagon once owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono sold for a reported $5,500.

CHRISTMAS RECORD STILL ON ITUNES: The freebie edited version of the 1963 Beatles' Christmas Record that we alerted you to on iTunes is still there. Here's the answer to the mystery about why it was there in the first place: On Dec. 23, everyone who had purchased The Beatles' box set on iTunes since its Nov. 16 launch received an email with the link to a free download of the Christmas message.  It will remain available for download until January 9.

SHE WILL ROCK YOU: Young Beatrice McCartney is proving herself quite the young lady assuming this UK Mirror story about her encounter with Queen guitarist Brian May is true.

There actually has been a legal DVD of the full Mike Douglas shows released before. The DVD set is from Brazil. I have a copy and it's absolutely perfect. It's no longer in print, but occasionally a copy shows up on eBay for sale. The only thing is that the enclosed booklet is written in Portuguese, but all the DVD menus etc are in English. I'm amazed it hasn't been released considering the Dick Cavett shows were put out...

I remember seeing John and Yoko in that green Chrysler wagon. They made a trip to Boston to see friends in Brookline in it in 1976.
