To help reduce the number of homeless cats, Kent Animal Shelter is offering the 2nd Annual ‘Beat the Heat’ promotion sponsored by PetSmart Charities®, and has been the only animal shelter participating in this national program in all of New York State. For just $20 cat owners can bring their female cats to Kent Animal Shelter, (2259 River Road, Calverton, NY 11933), during the month of February to be spayed.
Every spring, kitten season arrives where thousands of kittens are born and the majority of them are unwanted litters. Spaying a cat can be costly for the average cat owner, and they may decide to hold of spaying their cat, until it is too late and there is an ‘oops’ litter. And additional litters we all know can result more unwanted cats. While it may be freezing outside now, the ‘Beat the Heat’ promotion is available during the month of February to offset any more ‘oops’ litters.
“We are happy to be chosen by PetSmart Charities® for a 2nd year to be able to offer this very important program to cat owners here on Long Island. Most people don’t realize that female cats can have as many as three litters a year, and kittens can breed as young as four months old,” says Pamela Green, Executive Director of Kent Animal Shelter. “This ‘Beat the Heat’ promotion was very successful last year, and we know it helps our community by having less unwanted kittens and the title is a catchy way to educate cat owners too.”
Spaying and neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce the homeless pet population, as the sad truth is many unwanted litters get dropped of at animal shelters. While some owners worry that their pet may be too young for this procedure, spaying and neutering is safe for kittens as young as eight to 10 weeks old. And, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, spaying a female cat before the first heat cycle is actually beneficial, rather than waiting until after one heat cycle has occurred. The procedure is known to improve the health of the pet, including a reduced risk of certain reproductive cancers and infections.
This special rate is even less than the organization’s normal low-cost price and is available to all residents living on Long Island. Cat owners who want to take advantage of this offer must mention the “Beat the Heat” promotion when they schedule their appointment. The promotion is based on availability.
