Beat Summer Brain Drain with 10 Sports To Make Kids Smarter

See also

One way to beat Summer Brain Drain is to fill your child's lazy, hazy days with academically enriching activities like math, science, chess and computer programming. (Get a head start on all four by checking out the STEM Expo in Harlem this Saturday, May 17.)

But, if your child is more the kind who doesn't like to sit still or cooped up indoors, there are also sports that can exercise their minds at the same time as they exercise their bodies.

For instance, fencing is known as physical chess. (And they've got Mommy & Me classes for kids as young as 3!)

Soccer helps with executive function, problem solving, memory, planning and execution. (Get a list of NYC Soccer classes, here.)

There's also swimming for confidence and tennis for hand/eye coordination. (Find low-cost options for both under one roof, here).

But, don't limit yourself to merely summer sports. Think outside the box. A traditionally winter activity like Ice Dancing can also be beneficial. (And cooler!) NYC has indoor hockey and figure skating camps, too.
