Beat cabin fever with events in early February (Video)

By the time February rolls around, upstate New Yorkers are generally feeling some cabin fever. Even though this winter has been comparably mild, the dreary days can still bring on the "blahs." Fortunately, Humane Society of Rome (HSR) has some events that can get you out of the house and help you feel great by helping the cats and kittens in the shelter's care.

On Saturday, February 2, you and your kitty can get out for a bit by participating in a Chip N' Clip clinic. Granted, you will be happier than your cat at the prospect of a $25 microchip and a $7.50 nail trim, but all will be forgiven after some catnip and a new mousie toy. Proceeds will benefit HSR, and the event will be held from 11-2 at Tractor Supply Company's Rome location.

The next Dining for the Dogs (Cats & Kittens Too!) will take place on Tuesday, February 5 at Delta Lake Inn from 4:30-8. As always, proceeds will benefit the shelter.

For those interested in a more permanent cure for the winter blues, view the slide show to meet some of HSR's adoptable felines. An adopted cat provides entertainment and warmth throughout our long winters (as well as acting as a sunbathing buddy in the summer), and who among us wouldn't enjoy the love and affection that an adopted pet gives? The portraits in the slide show were taken by local photographer Becky Barrett, who works with shelters to help them show their adoptable pets in the best light.
