After the first two preseason games, an interception, and a 51 yard return for a touchdown against the Carolina Panthers, Bears rookie linebacker Jon Bostic delivered a solid hit on San Diego Chargers receiver Mike Willie forcing an incompletion. He is playing with intensity, and giving the defense momentum. He is showing the Bears that he deserves a starting position.
“I think Ray Charles can see it,“ Bears linebacker J.T. Thomas said with a laugh after Thursday night’s 33-28 victory over the Chargers. “Everyone can see it. Young, strong kid. Smart. The main thing is, he will hit you in the mouth. I would love to play alongside a guy like him.“
On a defense where he is joined by Pro Bowl players, and solid veterans, the Bears can afford his rookie mistakes while learning on the job. However, with veteran D.J. Williams out with a bruised calf, will Bostic be the starter or will it go back to Williams? Nobody knows except Coach Marc Trestman and Defensive Coordinator Mel Tucker. At this point, they don’t even know right now, but it should be interesting to see how they handle the situation.
Bostic went to the University of Florida, and was drafted by the Bears in the second round with the 50th overall pick this past April. He was considered one of the best linebackers in the draft.
No matter if he earns the starting job or not, the future looks bright for him and maybe, just maybe, he will be one of the best linebackers in Bears history.
