John Bearrie of Arlington, long recognized as perhaps the most talented amateur in North Texas, finally claimed his first state-wide title, winning the TGA Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship presented by Liberty Mutual with a convincing 5&4 win over John Derrick of Waco at the Dallas Athletic Club Gold Course.
The outcome was never in doubt after Bearrie, the 2008 North Player of the Year, won the first three holes and built a 5 up advantage on the front nine. After losing the 11th and 12th holes to allow Derrick some slim hope of a comeback, Bearrie quickly ended the match by winning the 13th and 14th holes with pars.
In the semifinals, Bearrie made four birdies on the back side to pull away for a 4&2 win over Jeremy Freedman of Dallas while Derrick pulled off a surprise 3&2 win over Rob Couture of Dallas.
Bearrie, who claimed medalist honors to go into match play as the No. 1 seed, needed to go to the 20th hole in his quarterfinal win over Aaron Hickman of Dallas while Freedman made a clutch par on the 18th to edge Danny Lovell of Dallas.
