Beardsley Zoo welcomes four baby river otters

River Otter Pup
Beardsley Zoo

The Beardsley Zoo located on 1873 Noble Ave. in Bridgeport Connecticut welcomed four baby river otter pups to the Zoo on February 15, 2014. Last week two female and two male pups had their first exam by the Zoo's vet that revealed they were healthy and almost ready to swim!

At nine weeks old, the pups are still a bit shy and have not yet ventured out in public. They have just opened their eyes within the last two weeks and have just started to explore the world around them. It is expected that their mother, Necedah will soon be encouraging them out to the water and teaching them how to swim. The pups will be swimming like pros within a week of hitting the water.

The pups are expected to be on view at the Zoo through the fall when it is possible that they will be moved to another accredited zoo for breeding. At the moment, the four pups, their mom, Necedah who is 2 years old and their father Rizzo, who is 11 are the only otters in residence at the zoo.

To celebrate the birth of the otters, the Aquarion Water Company is building a new otter display at the Beardsley Zoo with new ramps and slides that will assure non-stop antics by these playful animals.

The Beardsley Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking at the Zoo is free of charge.
