Bearded Dragons make good pets for the older child

Some people are just drawn to reptiles. They love snakes, turtles and lizards. The Bearded Dragon is good as a pet. They are quiet, docile and eat leafy greens, veggies, non citrus fruits and live or dried insects. This dragon lives in an aquarium. Keeping the aquarium clean is key for the health of the dragon and the owner.

They are not without their diseases such as Metabolic Bone Disease, Stomachitis or mouth rot and digestive impaction. Keeping track of your dragon’s bowel movements and eating habits and noting any changes will keep your dragon healthy. Any changes should be investigated by a veterinarian.

Salmonella can be contracted by handling this lizard so caution should be taken to keep hands washed and the lizard away from your kitchen and bathroom. Dispose of their waste in the trash much as you would do with your cat's litter box. Salmonella causes intestinal upsets which for most people are inconvenient and uncomfortable but not harmful. Very young children and those with compromised immune systems can be more at risk for problems if they contract Salmonella.
