In the wake of the Newtown tragedies and other recent events, it's comforting to know that there are local resources in the Richmond area to offer support for parents and kids. One of the local organizations offering support, resources, and help for parents and troubled kids is the Beacon Tree Foundation.
Early identification and intervention
One of the important aspects of Beacon Tree is their resources available to help parents identify if a teenager’s rebellious or destructive behavior is indicative of a more serious problem. When kids are depressed, parents are often the last to know – unless they know what to look for and observe in their children. Beacon Tree helps parents evaluate what's really going on with their kids.
According to the Beacon Tree website,
If we, as a society, offered as much assistance to parents of children who are suffering from anxiety or depression as we do the parents of a child with a health disease like cancer, we could avoid incidences like school shootings.”
They recognize the significance of early detection of depression or destructive behavior in kids, and intervention needed to potentially change the course of a life and many other lives affected. And that includes support and assistance to the parents of these troubled youth.

Furthering education
Beacon Tree also offers help for kids who need assistance with financing college and other educational needs. They focus on “financing and funding for families with at-risk teens, for the purpose of paying for private care/special educational facilities and programs, therapy and prescription drugs.”
With the news in recent weeks and years, this organization is a vital asset to our community.
They do great work to help kids struggling with mental, emotional, and drug/alcohol issues by not only identifying their need for assistance, but helping them further their education through:
- funding college scholarships and private high school grants for deserving teens struggling with these issues, and
- assisting in the arrangement of long-term, low-cost financing for pre-secondary educational and treatment purposes
Beacon Tree provides information, resources, and guidance for a variety of things that help students grow and develop in healthy learning environments. They offer assistance locating cost-savings opportunities for education, finding emergency medical assistance, and much more.
Beacon Tree offers resources for prenatal education for parents and every stage of parenting through the college years. Helping parents raise healthy kids from the point of conception until they are prepared to leave home is part of their mission.
