That’s right. The Superbowl has made its way into the world of literature. This year, Boston-based publisher Beacon Press and New York based publisher Other Press are teaming up for a special web promotion: placing bets on Superbowl XLVI’s face off between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.
“I’m thrilled to be working with our friends at Beacon Press on this promotion,” Terrie Akers, Other Press’s Manager of Online Publicity and Social Media, writes on their site. “It’s always rewarding to collaborate with other independent presses, and to have a bit of fun at the same time.”
“And it’s particularly rewarding when it’s so painfully obvious that the other team is going to lose,” he adds.
More from Beacon’s press release:
"The publisher whose home team loses will promote two of the other publisher’s titles for a week on the web, featuring the two titles on their website and promoting the titles across social media platforms. In addition, the publisher whose team brings home the trophy will give away a selection of its books to a handful of winners selected from online entries, and both publishers will uses their web presences to endorse the giveaway.”
Beacon Press, founded in 1854, is a small, independent publisher of “serious non-fiction and fiction.” They’ve published a number of landmark classics, including James Baldwin’s Notes of a Native Son, and Herbert Marcuse’s One-Dimensional Man, garnering a host of awards, such as Trade Publisher of the Year, the National Book Award, and the American Book Award.
Their current publishing program emphasizes “religion, history, current affairs, political science, gay/lesbian/gender studies, education, African-American studies, women’s studies, chills and family issues, and nature and the environment.”
According to their website, Other Press is an “independent publisher of novels, short stories, poetry, and essays from America and around the world—non-fiction and fiction—that explores how psychic, cultural, historical, and literary shifts inform our vision of the world and of each other.”
