After seven seasons, the popular show “30 Rock” may be in the books, but ice cream and frozen yogurt fans have something to look forward to this spring season. Just in time for spring break beach snacking, the Vermont-based Ben & Jerry’s ice cream company has announced a new frozen yogurt flavor, Liz Lemon.
In true celebrity fashion, the freshly concocted flavor was rushed from Ben & Jerry’s Vermont factory to New York City for an unveiling event in honor of the final season of the NBC series “30 Rock.” New flavors are usually released closer to spring, but the company decided to bump it up to accommodate the Jan. 31 finale of “30 Rock.” The tempting new flavor was unveiled by company co-founder Jerry Greenfield at a season finale party, just steps away from the show’s namesake building at Rockefeller Center.
Named for Tina Fey’s character in the show, Liz Lemon is a tangy blend of lemons and blueberries. Created by Tina Fey, “30 Rock” is based loosely upon Fey’s experience as head writer at “Saturday Night Live.” “30 Rock” also starred Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski. The show aired from October of 2006 to January of 2013.
Liz Lemon Greek frozen yogurt is described as lemon Greek frozen yogurt with a blueberry lavender swirl. This Beach Examiner can hardly wait to try it. Other flavors in Ben & Jerry's Greek frozen yogurt family include: strawberry with shortbread, raspberry with fudge, banana with peanut butter chunks, and blueberry and vanilla with graham cracker swirls.
How long will froyo fanatics have to wait to try the tasty new flavor? Apparently, not too long. The flavor will be available across the country in Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shops in February. It will be on grocery store shelves shortly thereafter, just in time for spring break and beach week taste-testing.
A limited number of tickets were available for Thursday night’s viewing party. All proceeds of ticket sales benefitted a local non-profit organization. The event featured “30 Rock” trivia contests, giveaways and the chance to sample the new flavor. The company will also offer a chance online to obtain the “30 Rock” flavor.
Sales of Liz Lemon Greek frozen yogurt will benefit the educational charity Jumpstart, of which Tina Fey has been a long-time supporter. Jumpstart is an early education organization that serves children in low-income neighborhoods, helping them to develop the language and literacy skills needed to be ready for school.
