Be Resolute, Manatee

Many frivolous New Year's resolutions have already been discarded. Most pretenders with their pie-in-the-sky strenuous workouts and crash diets are in default after only five weeks. It is now time for the resolution professionals to take center stage.

It is always easier to make resolutions for others than yourself. With that in mind, I, a long-time public school observer, have taken it upon myself to make a series of 2012 Resolutions for the Manatee School Board, superintendent, and board attorney.

(1) We will stay within our job descriptions so that we do not overstep our responsibilities.

(2) We will make transparency part of every school-related decision.

(3) We will prepare a fair, coherent, and complete district budget.

(4) We will restrict board meetings to general business items and district-wide concerns, while assigning most awards and testimonials to school visits by a superintendent or board member.

(5) We will restrict board meetings to no more than two hours.

(6) We will treat board meeting guests with respect at all times.

(7) We will respond promptly and in good faith to all legitimate public information  requests.

We will review, and adjust if necessary, the seven resolutions each spring. The above code of conduct for the major players at board meetings hopefully will lend an air of civility, which is curremtly lacking. You can never have enough class or too much concern for others!
