Moderate independents can search far and wide for some common ground between Liberals and Conservatives. Every once in a while, when the planets align just right, you can find something both groups agree on. Fortunately, blood donation is supported by both the Democrat and Republican parties.
LifeSouth Community Blood Center, located in Brooksville, will be parking the famous Bloodmobile in front of local Hernando County businesses and community centers, including Wal-Mart Supercenter, St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, and St. Luke's Cataract and Laser Institute (please see schedule below).
Right now, there is an urgent need of blood types A+, A-, O+, and O-, due to critical shortage. After blood is collected from a donor, it is separated into platelets, plasma, and red blood cells, and has the potential to save up to three lives. Red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days and platelets have a shelf life of five days. This means that blood can be shipped to other cities or even other states if the need arises. Alabama, for example, is in dire need of blood, and has even had to delay surgical procedures due to blood shortage. Further, type O- blood is compatible with any blood type, and type O+ blood is compatible with all other positive blood types. This means if you're an "O" of any charge, your blood is always in demand.
As if those are not good enough reasons to spare a pint of blood, donors have a choice of picking out a Florida Gators or Florida State Seminoles T-shirt. Each donor is also served some complimentary juice and cookies or crackers. The best part? The whole procedure, from start to finish, only takes about 30 minutes.
Virginia Boone, a LifeSouth phlebotomist, has been giving blood since before she started working at LifeSouth three years ago. "I just want to help other people," she said.
