The BE GREAT:Graduate program was created by the Boys & Girls Club of America and University of Phoenix to assist Boys & Girls Clubs help at-risk youth avoid the pitfalls of their environment. This is ever so important as many at-risk youth have few role models or extra-curricular activities upon which to observe. Those in heavily crime-addled neighborhoods need places that are safe havens for them to grow and flourish outside of school, and for some, outside of neglectful and abusive homes. The first ten Boys & Girls Clubs America that will be working in partnership with University of Phoenix will be in states of Massachusetts, Maryland, Georgia, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Ohio, Oklahoma, Arkansa, California and Arizona. Pat Gottfried, executive director, University of Phoenix Foundation stated:
"University of Phoenix strives to remove barriers to higher education for all students. We have been a long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America because we believe the path to higher education starts in childhood. Through the BE GREAT: Graduate program we can begin to positively influence these students and set a higher standard of educational achievement."
