Be cautious of mulch you use for a pet-friendly yard

Mine, mine, all mine!! cats and dogs

It is such a rewarding time of year when you are preparing your yards and gardens for your pleasure and enjoyment. When doing so, it is always important to ensure all items in the yard where you keep your dog is completely pet proof and safe for your dog's fun and enjoyment. Contact your local Rockford-area veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home if you have concerns about the mulch, plants and flowers you want to add to your yard so that you can ensure it is safe around your dog.

Adding mulch to a yard adds so much beauty and charm around trees, plants and other landscaping areas. The concern is that some mulch can be toxic to dogs. Most mulch is generally safe except for those made of cocoa bean. It produces a beautiful dark brown mulch with the aroma of chocolate. If ingested by a curious, inquisitive dog, it can result with severe signs associated with chocolate toxicity. If you have a dog that likes to eat anything and everything, it may be best to consider another type of mulch to beautify your landscaping.

A dog that nibbles on some cocoa mulch may show symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. If not caught early, you may also note restlessness, muscle twitching, hyperactivity, excessive urination and panting. In more severe cases, the dog may have seizures. As soon as you believe your dog ingested some of the mulch, call your vet immediately.

Typically, treatment depends on the severity of your dog's condition and the clinical signs. Some options may include fluid therapy and medications that remedies vomiting and diarrhea. Sedatives may also be prescribed to counteract the effects of the cocoa bean. An occasional "patient" may receive a medication to reduce the rapid heart rate and high blood pressure. Most often, a dog recovers from treatment within 24 to 48 hours.

It is best not to take chances with toxic products in the yard where your dog frequents most often. There are too many options of mulch with the same beauty and no toxicity that can put your dog in danger. Choose the safer option and ensure a happy, healthy dog.
