As constant reports on the news about children, young women, and those who appear weak to an aggressive attacker, we as people must keep a constant aware of our surroundings, even if it means fighting for our lives, or become the next news report of a death on a 9pm evening local news channel. As more crimes are reported, the question must remain in most loved ones minds, “ What could I have done to prepare for this before it could ever have happened?”, but that’s after the incident occurs when it is already too late.
Many today in our society, people are aware that harm can be done, but we will never know when an attack can occur at any time of the hour. Individuals who are attacked to even being mugged for their money, to possibly being sexually abused, or to be attacked by a weapon, an individual must learn how to fight back and not become a victim. Usually attacks are done by suspects who are stronger, bigger, and taller than the victim, and knowing that when one is alone, it is possible to be attacked by multiple of attackers. Which fighting on the ground, using Jiu-Jitsu, may not always be the best answer, unless the other attacker is not put down to the ground before handling other multiple opponents. Other styles of martial arts teach to defend oneself against multiple attackers, but knowing how to use the tools in that art, will determine how an individual will walk out being harmed in a threatening situation.
Those who are not knowledgeable about what style of self defense is best to learn, it is really about who is the instructor, and what is the level of the expertise of the instructor about self-defense, regardless of style, the most important tool a student must learn, is to be aware of your surroundings. Even an expert of self-defense can be hurt if other multiple targets have the ability to take out the instructor. But to be aware of where we are, who we are with, and what direction we take in our path on the street from what ever destination we are heading towards to, to be aware should be a constant reminder that danger will always be near.
Basics of Kenpo:
This is not to compare what is the best style, but to know what tools you must really know, when having to be aware of your surroundings, when being attacked by another individual who will cause you harm. Any part of an environment can be used as a weapon, but how we use that object to become a weapon, we must first learn to be aware of our surroundings, even if one punch can end the fight, but to be aware of other attackers who can and will harm an individual.
