No really! Sure, sure we all love superheroes (hey, who among us — when we were younger of course — didn’t tie a towel around our neck and pretend to fly around the room?) We read their comics, we see their movies, we watch their TV shows, and yes, some of us really dress up as them and patrol the streets of cities all across the country. Still, if going out to fight crime is not quite your thing, but you deem yourself a Heroest (someone who subscribes to the cult of heroes), then perhaps you will be one of those fine folk who will take this Halloween to create (or purchase) your own superhero costume and go out trick-or-treating and/or to an adult costume party.
Leigh Wendinger from HalloweenCostumes.com contacted us to let us know that, well, we weren’t as odd as we might have initially thought, and our own personal obsession with superheroes (especially spandex, and cosplay), is actually more prevalent than even we imagined. According to Wendinger the Pop Culture bug is definitely taking over society. Given the popularity of all things superhero (look towards Big Bang Theory) quite a few of people are buzzing about pop culture costumes right now (Not everybody wants to dress up as Miley Cyrus, thankfully).
Among men, the top three superhero costumes are:
2. Authentic Iron Man
3. The Joker (the Heath Ledger version)
Among women, the top three superhero costumes are:
1. Adult Wonder Woman Costume
2. Arkham City Evil Harley Quinn Costume
3. Adult Batgirl Superhero Costume
Wendinger indicated that while superhero costume ideas for men are quite popular, the most intriguing insight she and her staff gleaned is that female superhero costume sales actually far exceed those of the males. In fact, she concluded that it is quite possible, that many of the men’s costumes sold for Halloween were actually purchased as part of a “dynamic duo” costume set with a friend or female counterpart. Her staff concluded that male superhero costumes do not appear to be a big trend for men flying solo — at least not this year.
Needless to say, in the eyes of a child, mom is always a considered something of a superhero, so dressing as one simply helps reinforce that image of the fierce and powerful woman looking to express that inner heroine, making these costumes something of a regular staple for adult women. This is especially true in the case of the DC Comics character, Wonder Woman. This costume truly symbolizes female empowerment. As strong comicbook characters who hold their own, superheroes thus serve as inspirations to many women. As is evident with this information, the female fans are more than willing to tackle this look solo!
Oh, and yes, children also love superheroes. A child’s imagination is only enhanced by the idea of donning a superhero costume. As they “save the world” each Halloween, the fantasy is played out in full effect with the perfect costume on deck. The top-selling superhero costumes for children are
1. Batman Dark Knight Kids Costume
2. Child Wonder Woman Costume
3. Boys Spiderman Toddler Costume
4. Children’s Flash Costume
5. Child Wolverine Origins Costume
6. Avengers Hulk Muscle Kids’ Costume
7. Avengers Captain America Child Muscle Costume
So forget all of that “Funnybooks are just for kids” nonsense that your parents drilled into your head. Take a cue from Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, and Raj and get in touch with your inner superhero, because they have clearly demonstrated what we always knew, that Superheroes can be fun, sexy and powerful all at once.
