The Rushford-Peterson Trojans and the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa (BBE) Jaguars meet in the Class A finals of the 2014 MSHSL Boys’ Basketball Tournament. Both teams have only one loss on the season, both losses to higher-class schools.
Leading up to the finals the Trojans had averaged 71.3 points per game and given up 46.9 points per game, handily defeating most of their opponents. The Jaguars entered the finals outscoring their opponents by an average 77.9-47.9. For both, which team would emerge, the high scoring offense or the shutdown defense?
The Jaguars shot out of the gate to a 13-4 lead. The Trojans could not make a shot fall for anything in the first several minutes of play. The Trojans fought back and would not allow the game to get way out of hand. They went on a 21-8 run to end the half up 25-21 on a very balanced offensive performance.
The second half started as the first half ended, with the Spartans on top. The Jaguars tied the game six minutes into the second half, and after allowing the Spartans to tie it up a couple times, took over the game with six minutes left.
The last four minutes of the game belonged to the Beelgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars. The 5-7 point margins started to widen minute-by-minute until the lead was double-digit. The final score rested at 52-40. Both teams’ defense shut down the other’s offense, holding them to 20+ points below their season average.
In the end it was the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars who were able to stay fresher and, as the final minutes ticked away, shutting the door to win their second MSHSL Basketball tournament championship game in three years.
