Edinburgh will provide the setting for a six-part BBC One dramatization of Case Histories, the first book in Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie detective series. Actor Jason Isaacs, known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, will take on the role of Brodie, a private investigator faced with three apparently unrelated crimes. The television series will begin in 2011.
In announcing this development on July 26, 2010, Jay Hunt, BBC One Controller, remarked: "Case Histories is an exciting opportunity to bring contemporary adaptation to BBC One. I am delighted we will be bringing Kate Atkinson's books to the screen."
Kate Atkinson has published three books focusing on Jackson Brodie. Case Histories was released in 2004; One Good Turn, in 2006; and When Will There Be Good News, in 2008. Brodie will return in Atkinson's Started Early, Took My Dog, which has a U.S. release date of March 21, 2011.
The Edinburgh setting of Atkinson's books provides BBC One with an opportunity to show its commitment to its diverse audiences throughout the United Kingdom – an objective the network is currently emphasizing. A separate July 26th BBC press release highlighted comments made by Jana Bennett, Director of BBC Vision, on the need for BBC to "offer a more authentic window on the communities, landscapes and cultures of the UK."
