BBB warns consumers on latest utility bill phone scam

The Better Business Bureau, or BBB, issued a warning Saturday for consumers to be alert for a new scam targeting utility customers across the United States.

The warning comes after utilities companies in many states, including North Carolina and Wisconsin, have told customers about similar schemes.

Scammers are contacting customers of utility companies by telephone, telling the listener they are behind on their payments. The scammers then say the utility will be shut off within a certain amount of time if the bill is not paid. The scammers then require the listener to pay in cash to a representative coming to the home, or over the phone using a prepaid debit card.

The BBB urges anyone receiving a phone call from the utility company hang up and contact the company directly using the information provided on statements. Anyone contacted by these scam artists should call the police immediately.

This is the latest variation of the 2012 Obama utility credit scam.
