An unloaded BB pistol was discovered in a science lab drawer yesterday at Cedartown middle school according to Polk School District Superintendent Dr. William Hunter.
Parents of students were understandably concerned and shaken yesterday as reports began to surface that a gun had been found at the school. Some parents reported that they did receive a call from the school informing them of the discovery while other parents stated that they were not contacted.
Hunter said that the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Hunter also stated; "We will aggressively try to find the person that brought it to school".
Hunter had no reply regarding what time the gun was found and how soon were parents notified afterwards.
Some parents expressed relief that the gun was only a BB gun. BB guns are just as dangerous as any other weapon. Just ask the family of Tucker Mahoney of New Hope, PA.
At age 16, Tucker received a BB gun as a birthday present from his parents. Two days later, as Tucker and a friend played with the gun thinking that it was empty, it went off. The BB hit Tucker in the head with enough force to blow through his skull and penetrate his brain severing an artery and caused massive bleeding.
The injury has left him unable to walk, talk or even swallow on his own. Evidence in the case also suggests that many BB gun accidents happen after someone fires a gun they erroneously thought was empty.
