According to Variety.com and Entertainment Weekly, Paramount Pictures has selected Jeremy Garelick to write and direct a big screen comedic version of the show. The lifeguard drama ran on NBC from 1989-1990 and then in syndication from 1990 to 1999, staring David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.
Garelick said, "It felt like the template to do a movie that was similar to 'Stripes' and 'Police Academy,' the comedies I loved growing up,” instead of the dramatic version millions saw on TV. The script now focuses on two unlikely lifeguard candidates trying to catch on alongside the buff bodies that will be as abundant in the film as they were in the TV series.
Garelick recently worked on the rewrite for the massive hit, The Hangover.
Will the masses turn out to see the new Baywatch, since it’s described as a comedy in more of the light of “Stripes” than “Son of the Beach?” Who would you want to see as Mitch Buchannon or C. J. Parker? Has Baywatch been off TV to long for anyone to care at all?
