When "Baywatch" star Gena Lee Nolin first began her stint on the popular beach soap opera, the slender actress had no idea that a time bomb was ticking inside her body. Then, over the years, she began to gain weight, suffering various symptoms such as extreme fatigue along with the excess pounds, until she weighed 190 pounds, she told OMG Yahoo Insider on October 9.
Gena explained to OMG that because she was so well-known as a slim success story on "Baywatch," she felt especially self-conscious about her weight. Professionally and personally, Gena knew that she needed answers.
"It was hard. I did a guest spot on 'Fear Factor' and I thought it would be great… but I did it and they put me in a swimsuit and people were gasping. They didn't know how to treat me and looked at me like they were almost confused," Gena recalled.
Finally Gena was diagnosed with thyroid disease. She described the details on her Facebook page on October 11, writing, "I believe I was misdiagnosed for at least 20 years, based on symptoms I was experiencing over that time. I was diagnosed in 2009."
Now Gena has co-authored a book with a thyroid disease specialist: "Beautiful Inside and Out: Conquering Thyroid Disease with a Healthy, Happy, "Thyroid Sexy" Life" (click for details). She hopes that the book, together with her Facebook page that she's set up specifically to offer details on her battle, will help others.
In the notes on her Facebook page, Gena wrote on October 10: "I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and generosity with your comments about our book, "Beautiful Inside and Out." ...Thank you all for your support, it means the world to me. I am honored to be a part of the thyroid community."
