Bay to Breakers announces craigslist as sponsor

In a press release announced today, the Bay to Breakers has announced craigslist as a major sponsor for the 2013 race.

In a statement, craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster said “We’re tickled pink to sponsor the Bay to Breakers. A fellow San Francisco institution, this storied footrace celebrates the unique character of our colorful city, drawing fans and participants from around the world.” Craigslist, the world’s largest classified ad site with 50 billion page views per month, was founded by Craig Newmark, in 1995, in San Francisco.

Bay to Breakers Race Director Angela Fang was equally as excited with the new sponsorship in her statement -

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Bay to Breakers to partner with one of the world's most visited websites and another San Francisco original, craigslist. We are thrilled to add them as presenting sponsor. As the event moves into its second century, we can't imagine a better addition to the Bay to Breakers community."

Other sponsors announced today include AEG, Volkswagen, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Linkedin, the official race hotel Hyatt Regency and Dos Equis Beer.

The Bay to Breakers is one of the world’s largest races as well as one of the oldest. Held the third Sunday in May, the certified Track and Field 12 kilometer race was first held in 1912 and its race start is located in the downtown section of the City not far from San Francisco Bay, then passes through historic neighborhoods and scenic Golden Gate Park and finishes at “the breakers” of Ocean Beach. The popular event welcomes runners in costume and has a very entertaining costume contest. It also allows groups of at least 13 closely connected runners known as centipedes and unofficially features runners who prefer to enjoy the enormously festive event with just a pair of shoes, a hat, race big and perhaps a fanny pack.

In more recent years, event organizers have cracked down on the sometimes impressively crafted floats and the excessive consumption of alcohol among race participants. But the colorful costumes remain as well as live music, the naked runners and countless number of people who line the streets of San Francisco along the course, rooting for everyone that passes by. Preceding the event, there is the popular runner’s expo known as the Greater Body Expo and after the race, participants, their friends and family can enjoy food, drink and live entertainment at the Bay to Breaker's Footstock, in Golden Gate Park.

The 102nd Bay to Breakers will be held Sunday, May 19, beginning at 7:00 a.m. and race organizers expect more than 30,000 athletes from all over the world.
